Medical Transcription

Certifications for medical transcription are available through the Association of Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) or formerly known as the American Association of Medical Transcriptionists (AAMT). This is a professional organization that sets and maintains high standards in the practice of health record documentation to promote protection of the public and security for the US healthcare system.

The goal of a medical transcription certification is to uphold the competency of individuals in performing the job functions required in this profession. This encourages more physicians and healthcare providers to entrust their documentation requirements to those who have the proper credentials in medical transcription. A medical transcription certification also reflects on the person’s quest for self-improvement since this is continuing process of education and advancement in the field of medical transcription.

In order to become eligible for the certification exams, the individual must meet certain requirements as stated by the AHDI based on his professional level. He also needs to have 2 years of experience as a medical transcriptionist. He then goes through a series of transcription tests that will challenge his expertise and knowledge in medical transcription. A report on the exams result will be immediately given to determine if the person passed it or not. A passing transcriptionist receives the title of “Certified Medical Transcriptionist” which is valid for 3 years. After which, he is required to re-certify in order to carry on the title.

To date, getting certifications for medical transcription is not mandatory and is on a personal decision basis. However, obtaining a medical transcription certification allows individuals to gain more prospective job opportunities and pursue a long term career in medical transcription.
